Grassy area at Balmoral beach

Location: Balmoral Beach, Sydney NSW – a harbour beach on the north side of Sydney CBD.  It is located only 15 minutes drive from the city making it a popular choice with locals living on the lower north shore.
Size: Balmoral beach is made up of Edwards beach and Balmoral beaches, the locals call both beaches Balmoral…  The total length of both beaches is 1.3km

Type of beach: A fine sandy beach with some rock pools

Shade: Yes, there is some natural shade at the beach at each end and around the island in the middle, but the beach can get very busy in summer.

Water:  Clear blue water, you can see a lot of fish if you snorkel or wear goggles even in the shallows.

Features: Balmoral beach is a harbour beach and therefore you don’t get many waves making it a popular choice with families.  There is an island just off the beach (like 20m) which you can walk over to, rock pools at low tide and some great snorkeling near the island.

Lifeguards: No, this beach is not patrolled.

Facilities: There are lots of cafes and restaurants along the beach front where you can have a coffee, a cocktail, a glass or wine either to takeaway or a full fine dining experience.  There are toilets, showers and changing areas along the beach.

There is a netted swimming area at one end and at the other a natural wading pool which is great for children.  You will often find people fishing off the boardwalk near the netted swimming area.

You can hire standup paddleboards and kayaks at one end of the beach and there are a lot of sailing clubs.  There is street parking for 3 to 12 hours, but it is expensive at $8 per hour.  You can also find 2 hour free street parking, but in the peak of summer this is very difficult.  If you park on the streets around the beach and walk down you can often find unlimited free parking.  Mosman council run a free bus service called the Mosman Rider which will pick you up and drop you off on a certain route and you can just hail it as it comes past.

You can also get the 248 bus direct from the city which drops you right at the beach.

Suitable for:  Families with children, sunbathers swimmers and locals!

Overall

Balmoral beach is my local, just 7 mins walk down the hill, great for swimming and families due to the calm waters.  It can get very busy in summer because it is so close to the city, but I love the natural shade, the lack of big waves for swimming and that it has everything you need for a great day at the beach – even a fish and chip shop!
